Hometown Hero

Congratulations to John Joe Joyce who performed so well in the boxing ring today in Beijing. John Joe equalled his opponent on points and was defeated by the judges decision. A most dramatic, energetic and heartbraking performance from the St. Michael’s boxer who brought international acclaim to the club, the town and the country. A true champion and future contender for London 2012.

St Michael's Boxing Club has moved to new premises on the Stradbally Road - across from St Vincent's Hospital and for a small town has produced more international boxers than you can shake a stick at. The president of the Irish Amateur Boxing Association is Athy's Dom O'Rourke and we were unfortunate not to have at least two more in the Olympics - one due to injury at the last minute. Give a look in - you'll be welcomed.

I'm an American who's been following the boxing here on Yahoo (they don't show it here-- instead we get women's handball).

I must say I'm thrilled to death with the progress of all the Irish boxers. They've really performed well. I didn't see the match between John Joe Joyce and his second opponent, but it must have been very close. Still, much to be proud of for all 5 of the boxers.
