Africa Day


South East Laois Arts Network UNVEILS FULL PLANS FOR AFRICA DAY EVENT


Africa Day falls on 25th May each year and its aim is to celebrate African diversity and success, and to highlight the cultural and economic potential that exists on the continent of Africa. Since the publication of the White Paper on Irish Aid in 2006, the Irish Government – through Irish Aid – has made a commitment to support Africa Day events on an annual basis, thereby providing world leadership in this regard.

South East Laois Arts Network is among the 35 events taking place around the country this year to celebrate Africa Day.

The events planned by South East Laois Arts Network will take place week beginning 18 th May 2009 and will comprise of 2 full days of Drumming Workshops in Killeshin and Arles National Schools .

On Friday 22 nd Ballylinan Hall will be home to Drumming Workshops at 5.30pm pm and the highlight of the weeks entertainment will be a Concert at 8 pm by Wassa Wassas a collective of people living in Dublin who, with growing numbers, have found a keen interest in the traditions and cultures of West Africa. Among them, singers, dancers, drummers and teachers of same, who together and separately have spent many months on end studying in the region. Using the basic traditional rhythms and dances, they have added some contemporary and some traditional African songs and added their own arrangements, traditional costumes and hats you wont forget!

Saturday 23 rd African Dance Workshop in Ballylinan Hall from 4-6 pm
