Water restrictions to be lifted

Water restrictions to be lifted

Kildare County Council will lift water restrictions across the county for New Year’s Eve. The move comes in recognition of the day’s importance as a festive occasion for the community and the recent difficulties experienced by businesses in the hospitality sector.

However, the council is still asking people to conserve water as far as possible, so that recent gains in this area are not lost. Reservoir levels in the county have risen slightly over the last 24 hours, but water demand is still seven million litres a day above production capacity.

The council has been reducing water pressure at night in order to boost the conservation effort. Tonight’s reductions will begin at 6:00 p.m. and will last until 12:00 noon tomorrow so that reservoir levels can be increased. Water may not fully return to some outlying areas until early afternoon tomorrow. Reductions will recommence at 6:00 p.m. on New Year’s Day and will last until 10:00 the following morning. They will take place on a daily basis from then on until reservoirs are fully charged and demand returns to normal.

Athy Water Supply Tue 28th

Regrettably, water pressure and supply issues continue at a number of areas today Tuesday and are likely to continue tomorrow Wednesday.

A restriction to the regional water supply is now in place (affecting the Dublin and Kildare Road areas) and continues this evening until further notice. Water supply will be turned off each evening from 7.30pm to the following morning at 8am. Other areas in the town may also experience reduced pressure/ supply, as a result of this restriction.

The Town Council has made the following arrangements for water tanker/ stand pipes (at various locations) and will update these periodically on its website.

WATER TANKER SCHEDULE

A water tanker service is being provided as follows:

Tuesday, 28th December (PM)

- Ashville estate, Dublin Road 5.00pm to 6.00pm

- Coneyboro, Carlow Road 6.00pm to 8.00pm

WATER MAINS ACCESS POINTS

Water supply points (with taps) from mains supply have been set up at a number of locations throughout the town (subject to water pressure).

Currently the following 3 points are in operation:

- Emily Square (corner of Osborne's Solicitors);

- Coney Burrows, Coneyboro, Carlow Road;

- Fortbarrington Road (outside No. 73 Pairc Bhride)

The public can access water at these locations today Tuesday to 8pm and Wednesday from 8.30am to 8pm.

NB: As a precautionary measure water from these taps/ tanker should be boiled before using for drinking or cooking purposes. Please bring your own clean water container as the Town Council is not supplying containers.

Athy Town Council still continues to appeal to householders and businesses to conserve water. We also appeal to consumers to reduce their water consumption and in particular, people are asked not to leave taps running.

The Council is monitoring the water supply situation on an ongoing basis and will provide regular updates on its website http://www.athytowncouncil.ie/ and KFM radio.

If every household cuts back on their water usage by 10% this will have a significant effect on water availability and enable us to return to normal service sooner. www.taptips.ie
