Athy Tuesday Market- 19th August

Due to the current inclement weather forecast and levels of flooding at the Back Square and local roads, Athy Town Council wishes to advise all stall holders, traders and their customers that the operation of the market is suspended this Tuesday (19th August).

The decision been taken in the interest of public health & safety and in consultation with local Gardai & Civil Defence.

So the market has been cancelled because the river flooded - in August!! Is this the very river that the town's people were told never floods when they objected to the plans for the new swimming pool! But the town's people (or those that the council thought didn't matter) were ignored and the pool was built anyway (someone got a good back hander there). This pool has been built on what has been and always will be a flood plain - and an ex dump! Surely these two things together should have been enough to stop the planning application going through. Flooded land and ex dumping ground, in my limited knowledge, means unstable ground. How can the foundations to any building be done correctly on land this unstable. The Barrow flooding was the exact reason the council gave years ago for not building houses in the park, but now suddenly a big building, for not just a pool but other office / shop space also appears!! Who will be paying the bill for the mopping up that needs to be done when the winter weather comes and the river floods for months on end!!! I will take a guess that the hard working tax payers will be left to foot the bill. Well done Athy councillors, you should all give yourselves a pat on the back for a job well done - and go have a drink on the brown envelope that was no doubtedly handed over for the planning application been approved!!!

Took a walk down there that morning, and it appeared that many traders apparantly didn't know / didn't mind that it was cancelled, and carried on selling their wares as normal. Except in the temporary lake that covers part of that area, of course.
