The Famine Remembered



A commemoration service is to be held in St. Mary's Cemetery, Rockfield Road, Athy at 3.00 p.m. on Sunday 17th May to commemorate those unfortunate people from Athy and district who died in the Great Famine.

The 17th May has been designated as Famine Commemoration Day and ceremonies will be held throughout the country to mark the occasion.


St. Mary's Cemetery is the last resting place of the 1,200 or so inmates from the workhouse who died during the Great Famine. At the ceremony prayers will be led by Monsignor John Wilson, parish priest, for those who died in the Great Famine.
